This event will bring together Research Technical Professionals (RTPs) from the materials innovation community for a one-day programme of workshops, career talks and networking opportunities.
Commencing with an optional introductory networking event from 16:30 on Thursday 4th September, followed by an evening meal at the Manchester Museum, the main Friday programme will include sessions on a wide array of RTP focussed topics; career talks and panel sessions with RTPs from a diverse range of career paths; and a showcase of the opportunities NTPMI can offer.

As a part of the NTPMI mission we aim to celebrate and empower RTPs within the UK’s materials science community. This event will bring together RTPs from across this group, providing an opportunity to network, foster collaborations and exchange knowledge. Our goal is to enable RTPs to build a stronger community and help celebrate and communicate their achievements with each other.
There will also be workshops providing learning opportunities applicable to RTPs at all stages of their career, as well as a variety of talks from leading RTPs in the community. Attendees will be able to ask questions during Q&A panels and contribute their own ideas for the future direction of NTPMI.
The event is for Research Technical Professionals working in materials science in the UK. Accommodation and travel costs for RTPs from outside of the Greater Manchester area will be covered.
The Henry Royce Institute conference will be taking place at the Nancy Rothwell Building, University of Manchester between 3rd – 4th September and NTPMI conference delegates are also welcome to attend this or any sessions of interest.
After the course participants should be able to:
- Contribute to a network of RTPs within the materials innovation community
- Identify different career pathways available to RTPs
- Have a greater understanding of NTPMI and the opportunities it can offer

X-ray powder diffraction is one of the most common in-house characterisation methods, with its application being of interest for samples including metals, ceramics, mastery materials and pharmaceuticals, Dr Lewis Owen has devised a course aimed at arming delegates with the knowledge and skills to devise their own diffraction refinement work.
The Resource & Waste Management Expo (RWM) is the UK’s premier event for professionals working in the recycling, resource, waste, and broader environmental services industry. RWM invites participants to engage in critical discussions, explore ground-breaking green technologies, and to utilise the event as an international springboard for innovative waste and resource solutions that address the world’s environmental challenges.
Join Royce at the University of Sheffield at the UK Metals Expo 2023. The entire metals supply chain will be represented from primary metal manufacture, supply chain management, processing metals, fabrication, surface coatings and recycling with industry experts, leading vendors and trade attendees.
The first Henry Royce Institute ‘Fibre Technology Platform Showcase’ will introduce Royce equipment and capabilities to a wide audience, including both academia and industry.
The event will feature talks from academics and industrial providers related to fibre technology research and development (i.e. commercial delivery/production and case studies of academic innovation). This will be followed by a facilities tour - including wet and melt spinning lines, the nanofibers to devices suite with pilot-scale production capability and melt-electrospinning.
National Graphene Institute (NGI) are running a workshop ‘Twistronics of 2D Materials: from modelling to real systems’. The goal of the workshop is to bring together researchers from different modelling communities and experimentalists to discuss recent advances in the field of twistronics as well as future directions.
In this webinar, Henry Shine and Neal Pollock, patent attorneys at Wilson Gunn, will provide a beginner-friendly overview of the main intellectual property rights and concepts applicable to the field of materials science. The aim is to help viewers better understand and navigate the path to research commercialisation, through a description of real-world case studies to show how the theory was put into practice for previous materials science innovations.
Stand Out Skills is a webinar series for early career researchers working in materials science disciplines. Hosted by experts, each episode will explore useful presentation, communication, or career skills for researchers which aren’t normally taught as a part of traditional education pathways for materials scientists.
