Mechanical characterisation of super soft hydrogels
20
January

20 January 2022
11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Presented by Surface Ventures

Despite the ubiquitous use of soft aqueous hydrogels in biomedical applications, one of the major challenges is the ability to precisely control the mechanical properties of soft biomaterials to meet specific needs. However, the accurate and precise determination of soft materials’ low modulus (usually in kPa range) is problematic. Different methods provide values which vary by orders of magnitude, with most lacking the spatial resolution to identify modulus variations in a surface, and there are no reference materials which can be used to validate the methods and values obtained. The novel nanoindentation methods can differentiate between hydrogels with elastic moduli on the order of a single kiloPascal (kPa) using a soft contact protocol, to fill a measurement capability gap identified in literature.

In this free webinar Dr Xu will:

  • Introduce the soft contact protocol in nanoindentation.
  • Show nanoindentation tests on super soft hyrogels (1-10 kPa).
  • Show a new calibration method for the validation of the measurements.
About the Speaker
Dr Dichu Xu, University of Southampton
Following a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Zhejiang University, Dr Xu now works on an EU project “Medical Device Obligations Taskforce (MDOT)” which aims to develop the latest hydrogel coatings for excellent tribological performance in total hip replacement. Expertise and research interests include Nanoindentation on soft biomaterials, Friction & wear of Hydrogel coating, Numerical modelling of contact mechanics, Boundary lubrication, Raman spectroscopy & in-situ tribochemistry process.

PhD Student Research Sandpit
29 November 2021 - 08 December 2021
All Day
The Student Research Sandpit Workshop offers doctoral students the chance to experience the “Research Sandpit” format often used by research councils and other funders to stimulate and support new lines of thinking for tackling complex research challenges. The event will run virtually, part-time over ten days, so it can be managed in parallel with a doctoral research workload.
Showcase: Biofabrication and 3D Printing for Biomedical Applications
30 November 2021
9:00 am - 3:30 pm
Join us to learn more about Royce national facilities in Biofabrication and 3D Printing, as well as to find out more about opportunities for access and collaboration.
Turing-Manchester: Digital Twins Sandpit
01 December 2021 - 02 December 2021
2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Digital Twinning is a method of using real-world data to create a virtual representation to model a range of processes and systems and predict potential outcomes. The focus of this workshop will be around urban and environmental digital twins which are already transforming how cities are being planned, built, and managed, with examples appearing in cities across the world
68th Hatfield Memorial Lecture
07 December 2021
6:45 pm - 8:45 pm
The Hatfield Memorial Lecture is an annual event hosted by the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Sheffield. This year's lecture is titled, Moving Phase Boundaries as a Means to Transport Solute Atoms in Steels, from Professor Sybrand van der Zwaag, Delft University of Technology.
bp-ICAM: Designing Artificial Metalloenzymes for Sustainable Energy Catalysis
