This event will bring together Research Technical Professionals (RTPs) from the materials innovation community for a one-day programme of workshops, career talks and networking opportunities.
Commencing with an optional introductory networking event from 16:30 on Thursday 4th September, followed by an evening meal at the Manchester Museum, the main Friday programme will include sessions on a wide array of RTP focussed topics; career talks and panel sessions with RTPs from a diverse range of career paths; and a showcase of the opportunities NTPMI can offer.

As a part of the NTPMI mission we aim to celebrate and empower RTPs within the UK’s materials science community. This event will bring together RTPs from across this group, providing an opportunity to network, foster collaborations and exchange knowledge. Our goal is to enable RTPs to build a stronger community and help celebrate and communicate their achievements with each other.
There will also be workshops providing learning opportunities applicable to RTPs at all stages of their career, as well as a variety of talks from leading RTPs in the community. Attendees will be able to ask questions during Q&A panels and contribute their own ideas for the future direction of NTPMI.
The event is for Research Technical Professionals working in materials science in the UK. Accommodation and travel costs for RTPs from outside of the Greater Manchester area will be covered.
The Henry Royce Institute conference will be taking place at the Nancy Rothwell Building, University of Manchester between 3rd – 4th September and NTPMI conference delegates are also welcome to attend this or any sessions of interest.
After the course participants should be able to:
- Contribute to a network of RTPs within the materials innovation community
- Identify different career pathways available to RTPs
- Have a greater understanding of NTPMI and the opportunities it can offer

Dr Chris Hamlett, National Outreach Officer for Discover Materials, will discuss his pathway through materials science and into outreach in the latest Stand Out Skills Webinar. He will expand on how his multidisciplinary research background in chemistry and physics helped on his path to making a career around inspiring the next generation of materials scientists.
The Royce Data Curation team will host a 3-day workshop aimed at materials science researchers new to these languages, and those looking for a refresher; designed to give you confidence in using shell, Git and GitHub, and Python. You might be a complete beginner, or might have engaged briefly in the past. In developing these skills you will be well-placed to begin your digital research journey and apply basic computational approaches to materials data. A basic understanding would be helpful but not necessary.
The conference is intended to be a forum for early career materials, minerals and mining scientists and engineers from across the UK to come together and present their research on the materials they are developing and working with, with the hope of improving presentation and poster skills, along with initiating collaboration between research groups, and between industry and academia.
