Royce Hosts PhD Summer School in Ongoing Support of M4QN

Royce is delighted to host the M4QN Summer School, a four-day residential event designed to bring together PhD researchers based in the UK who are working on quantum materials and technologies.

Established in 2022 and funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the Materials for Quantum Network (M4QN) brings together the world-leading UK materials research base, the existing National Quantum Technologies Programme (NQTP), and the developing quantum technologies industry base in a UK-wide coordinated effort.

This Summer School is the second network meeting hosted at the Royce Hub in Manchester targeted at PhD students researching materials for quantum technologies and is fully supported by the M4QN network grant. Read more about the first meeting here.

Taking place in June 2025, the summer school – now sold out – will explore the latest advances in quantum devices, optoelectronics, spin systems, and materials science, while also addressing policy, reproducibility, and careers in quantum technologies.

Key Themes & Highlights include:

  • Cutting-edge research: Including quantum devices, computing, sensing
  • Leadership & Policy: Sessions on emotional intelligence, research openness, and influencing quantum policy.
  • Career Development: Career panel with academic and industry experts.
  • Public Engagement: Dedicated session on outreach and education
  • Hands-on Networking: “Quantum Untanglement” activity and student-led Quantum Café.

Key speakers include:

  • Jessica Boland, Senior Lecturer in Functional Quantum Materials, University of Manchester – Devices Keynote
