In-Situ Sensors and Measurement for Tribological Contacts
27
April

27 April 2023
3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

The measurement of load, torque, temperature, speed, and displacement is common in many kinds of machines. However, most of these sensors capture data about the machine or individual components at a macro-scale. In tribology the important interactions, and the ones that really need sensing, occur at the micro-scale of contacts. For example, the actual flash temperature on a gear tooth, the contact pressure in a rolling bearing, asperity contact in tilting pad, or the film thickness in a seal. Sensing these parameters in-situ in a tribo-contact is challenging. There are several physical phenomena we can use; electrical resistance and capacitance, optical interference and fluorescence/absorption, and acoustic transmission/reflection. This talk covers some designs of sensors based on these physical principles and what researchers have been able to measure with them. The talk includes the author’s own specialist area ultrasonic reflection and a case study on a wind turbine bearing.

MaDE New Designers Hackathon
04 July 2024 - 05 July 2024
All Day
To solve the grand challenges our society faces, we need to think differently. This is particularly true in established industries that produce the materials that form the basis of our economy – i.e. the Foundation Industries1. Inter-disciplinary collaboration between students and researchers will open up the possibility of innovative approaches to climate change and other global problems.
Advanced Metallic Systems CDT Postgraduate Research Conference
09 July 2024 - 10 July 2024
All Day
New Insights in Metals; from advanced characterisation to simulation' is the Annual Postgraduate Research Conference in Metallic Materials hosted by the AMS CDT.
FEMS Junior EUROMAT 2024
15 July 2024 - 18 July 2024
All Day
The FEMS Junior EUROMAT 2024 will continue to inspire, develop and celebrate the skills and work of students and early career materials scientists and engineers.
24th International Conference On Solid State Ionics
15 July 2024 - 19 July 2024
12:00 am
SolidState ionics is the fundamental underpinning science behind many of the electrochemical technologies needed to achieve net zero, such as fuelcells, electrolysers to produce green hydrogen, Li and sodium batteries for transport and grid storage.
Stand Out Skills: Open Data in Materials 4.0
31 July 2024
10:00 am - 11:00 am
Stand Out Skills is a webinar series for early career researchers working in materials science disciplines. Hosted by experts, each episode explores presentation, communication, or career skills for researchers which aren’t normally taught as a part of established education pathways for materials scientists.
