Imperial College London

Imperial is a world-leading university for science, technology, engineering, medicine and business (STEMB), where scientific imagination leads to world-changing impact.

Royce at Imperial is a hub for both industry and academia to make, test and characterise materials, components and systems. Take your research to the next level with our capabilities in thin film deposition, patterning and milling, electrical testing, and advanced characterisation techniques.

The ‘Atoms to Devices’ (A2D) research area is the focus for Royce at Imperial. Our vision is to work alongside other Royce A2D partners to provide cross-disciplinary technology platforms to facilitate and support the accelerated discovery and development of new device materials. Through the deposition of precisely controlled thin films, the engineering of interfaces, and the ability to control doping on the nanoscale, A2D enables the development of new devices and technological solutions that have diverse applications in society.

Imperial’s research supports applications such as electronic materials for the energy transition to meet net zero carbon targets by 2050, including research into photovoltaics, calorics and thermoelectrics, and low-loss electronics. Other applications include efficient catalysts to support hydrogen generation, chargeless electronics, new computing architectures, quantum technologies, and bioelectronic sensors to support personalised healthcare and clinical assessment.

Core Facilities

Situated within the Sir Michael Uren Hub at the heart of our White City Campus, Royce at Imperial’s facilities include thin film deposition, patterning and milling, electrical testing, and advanced characterisation techniques.

Sir Micheal Uren Hub

Royce Facilities within the Uren Hub specialise in the generation of thin films for sensors and other electronic devices, patterning and milling, electrical testing, and understanding the chemical and physical properties of advanced materials.

Technology Platforms

Royce Technology Platforms are groupings of cutting-edge facilities and expertise. Each Platform has a Technology Platform Lead responsible for developing and enhancing the facilities and supporting related research activities which utilise Royce Equipment.

Thin Film Device Materials

This platform provides capability for the manufacture of bespoke thin film devices, from deposition and patterning to electrical, physical, and optical characterisation, embracing the entire research and development life cycle.

Core Research Areas

Atoms to Devices

The vision of the ‘Atoms to Devices’ (A2D) Research Area is to provide the cross- disciplinary technology platforms to facilitate the accelerated discovery and development of new device materials.

A2D is the quantum scale engineering of new technologies, that can translate into applications ranging from photonics, imaging, semiconductors and sensors, through to energy storage, biomedical materials and quantum technologies.

The research area comprises modelling, design, growth, fabrication, characterisation, and testing of electronic, spintronic and opto-electronic devices. Application examples include development of electronic materials for the energy transition, and design of bioelectronic sensors to support personalised healthcare.
