In this fantastic Nature Communications article scientists from across the materials community are interviewed about how we can celebrate and support early careers researchers.
The article came about thanks to the huge efforts made by Lucy Whalley (Assistant Professor at Northumbria University), Dr Katie Shanks (Postdoctoral Researcher, University of Exeter), Dr Jess Wade (Royal Society University Research Fellow and Lecturer in Functional Materials at Imperial) and George Miller (Royce Student Engagement Manager) who jointly organised the Rising Stars Workshop, which was once again sponsored by Royce and held in February.
In the article Dr Alex Ramadan (Lecturer at the University of Sheffield), Dr Lucy Whalley, Dr Maddison Coke (Senior Experimental Officer at the University of Manchester) and Dr Yi Liu (Lecturer at Loughborough University) discuss the opportunities and challenges they face towards their career with work-life balance, family and caring responsibilities, and diversity and inclusion in their workplace, and share their experiences on how mentorship supports their personal and professional growth.
Rising Stars will take place once again next January, so if you are a UK-based ECR in Materials Science from and underrepresented background, and feel you might benefit from this opportunity, you can find out more about the day and complete and expression of interest on the Royce website.
