Overview
Rising Stars guides participants in developing their own research vision, gaining commercialisation skills, building community networks and exploring career pathways. The event is returning to the Henry Royce Institute for the third year, aiming to celebrate and support ‘rising stars’ from under-represented groups working in materials science research and innovation.
Participants will have opportunities to discuss their own career challenges and talk with the organisers on their own experiences with work-life balance, family, and caring responsibilities. The activities will also explore the importance of diversity and inclusion in the workplace, as well as the benefits of mentorship for personal and professional growth.
This event is free to attend.
To learn more about what to expect, please read this article – Celebrating and supporting early career researchers within underrepresented groups in materials science – published in Nature Communications following the 2024 event.
Past event participants testimonials include:
“[I enjoyed] getting questions answered about different routes into academia/industry- including tips on putting yourself out there even if you don’t feel that confident!”
“It was refreshing to see panellists sharing their thoughts and advice from their personal experiences especially when women are underrepresented in STEM and academia.”
“[Fellowships are] typically something that supervisors/PIs don’t discuss so this was a really excellent part of the workshop”
Audience
This event is aimed at late-stage PhD students, PDRAs, and early career researchers working in all areas of materials science in the UK.
Royce can support attendance at the event by offering reimbursement of travel expenses for those living outside of Greater Manchester. Participants with caring responsibilities can also apply for support.
