Services for Academia

Royce's capabilities are open to all UK academics and research students, regardless of institution. Academic access to facilities can be funded through various sources, including equipment access budgets or research council grants

Empowering the Academic Community

The UK academic community in materials science is diverse, engaging with numerous industrial sectors, professional institutes, and organisations; the Royce Partnership provides an environment for sharing ideas, facilitating debate, improving connectivity, raising awareness, and highlighting future research and innovation opportunities.

Our state-of-the-art laboratories and buildings act as catalysts, substantially growing these connections and research activities. With over 200 pieces of cutting-edge equipment and expert technical teams, we make these resources openly available. Researchers across the UK can perform experiments that would otherwise be impossible, enabling world-class science to be initiated quickly and cost-effectively.

The research conducted at our facilities has led to hundreds of published papers and significant grant and industry funding for our researchers. This work has brought the wider research community together, opening up new collaboration opportunities between academia and industry.

Our Services

Student Access Scheme

Our Student Equipment Access Scheme exposes students to new techniques, capabilities, and networking opportunities outside their home base, fostering further academic collaboration. The scheme offers funding for UK-based doctoral and research master's students, and researchers at all career stages, from PDRAs to tenured academics. Designed to open up Royce facilities to the UK academic materials community, it aims to build relationships across institutions. All Royce equipment is available to browse in our catalogue.

Industrial Collaboration Programme

The Royce ICP fosters dynamic innovation projects that bridge industry, universities, and research technology organisations. Funded by the EPSRC, this initiative builds impactful relationships, facilitating the translation of materials innovation across the economic value chain, from start-ups to corporates and from materials discovery to final product production. UK-based higher education institutions, research and technology organisations, charities, not-for-profit organisations, and businesses of any size are eligible for funding awards as project leads or collaborators. Now in its fourth iteration, the ICP aligns with Royce’s mission to serve as a catalyst for technology translation, providing essential R&D support to overcome industry hurdles.

Shaping the Materials Agenda

Royce has established an independent Materials Innovation Leadership Group, comprising industry, academia, and research technology organisations, to provide a national voice for the materials community. This group is developing a National Materials Innovation Strategy, focusing on translating leading-edge UK materials science into new products and services to address major policy challenges like net zero, health improvements, and sustainable resource use. We have also initiated several National Materials Challenges with close involvement of the academic research community to drive targeted materials research in the UK, building research roadmaps to address technology gaps and create a national research business case.

Project Funding Opportunities

Royce provides and supports a number of collaborative funding initiatives which can be accessed by industrial partners. Browse our catalogue of current funding calls and collaborate with Royce to provide the next generation of materials innovations in the UK.

Technical Training Courses

Royce delivers a diverse program of awareness training courses and technical skills workshops for the UK materials science community. We run training events with our partners to increase awareness of Royce facilities and help researchers access the equipment and support they need. Our technical training program, structured around our Technology Platforms, covers leading-edge characterisation, testing, and manufacturing techniques. These courses incorporate successful activities already delivered across our partners, catering to the needs of students and research and technical staff from both academia and industry.

Collaborative Programmes

Royce leads or partners in major collaborative projects across disciplines, institutions, and industries, enhancing innovation across the materials and manufacturing supply chain. These projects aim to accelerate the translation of academic research into commercial opportunities and support regional economic development. With a focus on regional and national representation for materials innovation, Royce partners in infrastructure and innovation projects to foster new collaborations. Our geographical presence in the North and reach across the country enable us to address spatial inequalities and support advanced materials innovation nationwide.

Cutting Edge Equipment

Royce offers industry and academia the capability to make, test and characterise materials, components and systems. Over £150m of equipment is available, easy to access and technically supported. Browse the catalogue or contact Royce to discuss how our capability can support your specific challenge, opportunity or R&D programme.
