Training and Skills

Through our Training and Skills programmes, we are increasing the number and diversity of highly-skilled researchers and technical staff right across every part of the materials science ecosystem.

To drive innovation, we recognise we must put the development of people at the heart of our mission

Our initiatives are directed at developing research and technical expertise across materials science, and in raising awareness of the fantastic array of career pathways in the discipline.

We achieve this through:

  • The delivery of a wide-ranging technical upskilling programme for industry and academia which embraces both detailed materials science techniques and broader awareness courses
  • The development of a new generation of future researchers in materials science with a balance of skills across techniques, innovation, commercial awareness, project management, team-working and problem-solving
  • A wide-ranging outreach programme driven by widening participation and stimulating awareness and uptake of materials science

Our training events are of relevance to a wide range of scientists and engineers. We deliver skills and training for PhD students, early-career researchers, technicians, as well as experimental and application scientists

Our content is relevant across academia, as well as in SMEs and industry, and partnership-style delivery helps drive collaboration, networking and innovation in advanced materials.

Our Services

Technical Skills

Our Technical Training courses provide innovators, technical professionals and researchers with the knowledge needed to make effective use of Royce facilities across the UK, providing access to a network of professional support and equipment which can accelerate innovation.

Student Engagement

Royce places the development of scientific and technical expertise at the heart of its mission, and has developed a range of supporting activities design for both current materials, science and engineering students, as well as those starting out on their research careers.

Public Engagement & Outreach

Royce supports a range of engagement activities, exhibitions and events to enable the public to gain insights into materials science and the ongoing research at Royce. Along with our Partners we attend and support events around the country to involve the public in the work that Royce undertakes and supports as the UK’s national institute for advanced materials research.

Entrepreneurship Support

To address the challenges many researchers face when commercialising their innovations, Royce is equipping the next generation of materials science researchers with the skills required to understand and engage with the commercial process.

Doctoral Training

A new generation of researchers will be trained in the digitalisation of materials science through the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Developing National Capability in Materials 4.0. The core principle behind our training programme is to take students ‘from learners to leaders’ over the course of their studies. Bringing together high-throughput experimentation and modelling, big data and machine learning will transform materials science.

Schools Outreach

Royce’s collaboration with Discover Materials and its fantastic Ambassador Network, showcases materials science to school-age audiences, including under-represented groups. The Discover Materials teams promotes materials science as a discipline and valid subject choice as well as supporting teachers to do the same.
