Advanced materials are the invisible engines of our modern world

Many of our biggest technological leaps, from the smartphones in our pockets to the ships and planes that defend our seas and skies, rely on the discovery and application of new materials with advanced properties.

The Henry Royce Institute has developed the Materials Map of the UK to help showcase the strength, scale and regional diversity of the UK’s materials innovation ecosystem.

About the Materials Map

The Materials Map provides a regional snapshot of materials innovation activity across the UK.

It brings together data on materials businesses, employment, estimated economic contribution and sector strengths across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The map highlights the breadth of materials activity taking place across the country, from large strategic companies to innovative SMEs developing new products, processes and technologies.

It is intended as a starting point for discussion, helping policymakers, industry, researchers and the wider public better understand where materials innovation is taking place and how it supports regional and national growth.

Why materials innovation matters

Materials innovation plays a vital role in supporting the UK’s economic resilience, industrial capability and transition to net zero.

New and improved materials can help make products lighter, stronger, more durable, more efficient and more sustainable. They are essential to many of the UK’s priority sectors, including advanced manufacturing, clean energy, aerospace, defence, automotive, health technologies, infrastructure and the circular economy.

The UK materials sector contributes an estimated £49 billion to the economy and directly employs up to 635,000 people nationwide. This activity supports businesses, supply chains and high-value jobs in every part of the country.

Supporting national priorities

The Materials Map builds on the evidence base developed through the Royce-led National Materials Innovation Strategy.

The strategy was developed through extensive engagement with industry, academia and government, setting out a unified call to action to help the UK unlock the full potential of advanced materials.

The Materials Map supports this agenda by providing a clearer picture of existing regional capability and future opportunity. It can help inform conversations about investment, skills, infrastructure, industrial strategy and the development of stronger innovation pathways from discovery through to deployment.

A UK-wide innovation landscape

The Materials Map shows that the UK’s materials innovation capability is distributed across all regions and nations.

Each area has its own distinctive strengths, shaped by local industrial heritage, research capability, infrastructure, supply chains and emerging technologies.

Examples include automotive and aerospace activity in the Midlands, foundation industries and consumer goods in the North West, engineering and construction strengths in Scotland and Wales, life sciences activity in the East of England, and marine, aerospace and equipment manufacturing in the South West.

Together, these regional ecosystems form an important national asset.
