Dr Tom Brown

Application Scientist

Tom Brown is an Application Scientist at the Henry Royce Institute.

He returned to education later in life and completed his PhD in high temperature dielectrics (Material Science and Engineering) from the University of Leeds. After post-doctoral positions, he was asked to manage the X-ray diffraction facility at the Bragg Centre for Materials Research. This allowed him to broaden his experience of analysing different materials and work on a variety of research projects, whilst also gaining an in-depth knowledge of this technique and its various modes of operation.

Since been appointed Royce application scientist at Leeds, he has worked to expand his data collection and analysis skills over a wide range of techniques including SEM (EDS and EBSD), TEM, XCT and FIB-SEM nanoindentation amongst others. He has maintained his connection to the X-ray facility where he is active in collaborating to enhance its capabilities with the introduction of X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) and Pair Distribution Function analysis (PDF). He is committed to using his contacts in academia and industry to foster cooperation to address complex materials challenges.
