Dr Sarah Glanvill is a Member of the Henry Royce Institute’s Strategic Advisory Board
Sarah is a materials scientist and engineer with a strong track record in driving innovation and change within industry. In August, she will be taking on a new role as Co-head of Materials and Mechanical Metrology at NPL.
Previously, as a Lead Materials Scientist at Renishaw plc, Dr Glanvill managed and lead the Materials Research Team. Her responsibilities included strategising, defining project scopes, and executing R&D initiatives focused on materials science. She oversaw projects from conception to completion, collaborating with designers, engineers, and external partners to advance technologies and solutions across Renishaw’s product portfolio, with a focus on sustainability.
Sarah holds a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Birmingham and Diamond Light Source, where her thesis focused on the “Atmospheric Corrosion of Aluminium Alloy 2024 in Ocean Water Environments”. She also earned a BSc Joint Honours in Material and Sport Science from the University of Birmingham. Her technical skills include expertise in atmospheric corrosion, electrochemistry, sustainable materials and materials processing, additive manufacturing, and various analytical techniques such as synchrotron X-ray tomography, Raman, and SEM.
Sarah is a passionate Materials Scientist, A Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (FIMMM) and a Chartered Engineer (CEng) and Scientist (CSci), Sarah is also an Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham. She is recognised as a mentor, an advocate for balancing science, industrial R&D, and commercial outputs.
