Research Area Lead: Material Systems for Demanding Environments

Professor Fabio Scenini is a Research Area Lead for Material Systems for Demanding Environments at the Henry Royce Institute and is based at the University of Manchester.

Fabio is a professor in materials performance with a rich academic and research background. He earned his Mechanical Engineering degree from Politecnico di Milano, an MSc in Corrosion from UMIST, and a Ph.D. from the University of Manchester. Promoted to senior lecturer in 2017, reader in 2020, and now a professor, his research focuses on materials performance and corrosion, particularly on issues related to the manufacture, operation, and maintenance of materials under extreme conditions such as those in nuclear power plants. His current research interests include material performance issues such as corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, fatigue and fracture, and hydrogen embrittlement, particularly of the stainless steels and nickel-base alloys, both conventionally and additively manufactured, employed in nuclear power plants and the aerospace industry.

Prof. Scenini has developed high-pressure, high-temperature testing capabilities at the Royce Hub at the University of Manchester, for the nuclear industry and beyond. He has extensively collaborated with industry partners and has authored over 120 papers and conference proceedings.

Research interests

  • Mechanistic understanding of stress corrosion cracking and corrosion assisted fatigue of austenitic alloys in nuclear environment
  • Oxidation studies of Ni base alloys in aqueous and steam environment relevant to light water reactors
  • High temperature aqueous electrochemistry
  • Application of image correlation techniques to materials manufacturing
