Professor Aron Walsh

Research Area Lead: Modelling and Simulation

Aron conducted his PhD in computational materials chemistry at the University of Dublin, Trinity College. Based on his thesis covering structure-property relations in post-transitional metal oxides, he received the Young Irish Scientist Award from the Royal Irish Academy. He then moved to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in the USA as a Postdoctoral Researcher, working in the Solar Energy Research Facility. He later joined University College London as a Marie Curie Research Fellow before becoming a Royal Society University Research Fellow at the University of Bath within the Centre for Sustainable Chemical Technologies.

Now a Full Professor in the Department of Materials at Imperial College London, Aron leads the Materials Design Group, which develops computational tools to probe chemical interactions at the atomic scale and applies them to the data-driven design of materials for renewable energy technologies. His research spans science and engineering, focusing on functional semiconductors, energy materials, and the construction and application of artificial intelligence techniques to address challenges in materials chemistry.

Aron is known for research breakthroughs in topics as diverse as transparent conducting oxides, electroactive organic-inorganic solids, and next-generation photovoltaics and batteries. He has been on the Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher List since 2018. Aron’s work has been recognised with multiple awards, including the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Corday-Morgan Prize, the European Materials Research Society EU-40 Prize, and the Leverhulme Trust’s Philip Leverhulme Prize. He is the Imperial College lead for the Royce Centre for Doctoral Training in Materials 4.0.
