Dr Andrew Smith is the Royce Partner Lead for the Materials Research Facility (MRF) at UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA).
The facility utilises a fully shielded workflow where samples are transported into shielded instrument enclosures where the instrument is housed for operation. The analytical suite includes microstructural, mechanical and thermo-physical characterisation techniques.
Before joining UKAEA in 2025, he worked in the chemical industry for nearly 30 years. He has technical expertise across materials (glass-ceramics, functional coatings, adsorbent materials and catalysts) and led teams in R&D and strategic research management and innovation.
His previous role was the Open Innovation Technology Manager for Johnson Matthey, where he led a team developing governance and portfolio management of external R&D collaborations and delivered technology road mapping as a tool to support R&D decision making.
Andrew is also a Fellow of the RSC and engaged in mentoring fellow scientists to achieving chartered chemist status.
