School children across the country tune in to Discover Materials during British Science Week

Live electron microscopy, a materials scavenger hunt and a panel discussion on recycling were just some of the activities in a broad programme of outreach events organised by the Discover Materials group for British Science Week 2021.

Running from 5-14 March, British Science Week is an annual ten-day celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths, featuring entertaining and engaging events and activities across the UK for people of all ages.

Materials Science outreach group Discover Materials – which is a collaboration between a group of UK universities’ Materials Science departments, the Henry Royce Institute for Advanced Materials, and other members of the Materials Science community – hosted live YouTube sessions, as well as creating additional video content and activity sheets for use in the classroom and at home, to engage school children of all ages in the excitement of materials science.

“We have had a fantastic British Science Week, and our activities gave a great flavour of what materials science is, why we test materials and why thinking of the whole lifecycle of a material is of vital importance for both the environment and for materials availability for future technologies”, said Royce National Outreach Officer and Discover Materials group member Dr Chris Hamlett.

Resources and videos from all of Discover Materials’ virtual outreach events are available through the Discover Materials website, and their YouTube channel. Follow Discover Materials on Twitter and Instagram to be the first to hear about their news and upcoming events.
