Royce on the Road: Spring Events Roundup

4 June 2025

The Research and Business Engagement (RBE) team here at Royce have been busy this springtime, attending a number of events and conferences to spread the word about Royce and network with organisations and academic institutions with interests in the materials science space.

Royce Oxford exhibited at the European Materials Research Society (E-MRS) Spring meeting in Strasbourg this month, their first foray into international conferences! They were the sponsors of the solid-state batteries symposium and the calibre of research on display was fantastic to see. The image below shows Royce Oxford’s Michael Hills (Application Scientist) and Robin Morris (Royce Oxford’s RBE Lead) at their exhibition stand.

In May, we had a large presence at CHEMUK 2025 at the NEC in Birmingham this month, not only with Royce exhibiting but also with Royce’s Chief Scientific Officer, Prof Ian Kinloch, delivering a keynote speech on the National Materials Innovation Strategy.

Royce also participated in some panel sessions at the event.

The first, “Hydrogen – Unlocking the Materials Challenges” featured Robin Morris as a panellist, and explored complexities of hydrogen materials technology translation and commercialisation, as well as the support available to accelerate progress in this area.

The second, “Sustainability in the materials and chemicals sector from Cradle to Gate to Grave – industry case studies” featured Lorraine Ferris, Royce Industry Fellow as Chair and highlighted case studies based upon the panel’s specific approaches to sustainability which will demonstrate the range and complexity of considerations within the sector.

At the Royce Hub in Manchester, the technical training team hosted the sold-out course “Milling, Particle Characterisation, Tube Furnaces and Hardness Testing” with laboratory equipment manufacturer Verder Scientific. Attendees were given insights and best practice on these subjects in context of advanced materials fabrication. They also learned from scientists and engineers at Verder Scientific on how they have approached these challenges and optimised equipment for use in multiple sectors of materials science, from aerospace, to nuclear, to biomedical materials.

Here are a few examples of feedback we received about the training:

“Seeing Verder’s equipment in person … was incredibly useful to me professionally.”

“Thank you for your continued efforts to keep us up to date with the latest scientific equipment and innovations. Your support plays a vital role in advancing our research capabilities.”
