Royce launches new learning resources for Materials Science Outreach

18 September 2019
  • Royce launches outreach website to promote materials science & engineering on national scale
  • New learning resources aim to support teachers to inspire the next generation of materials scientists

The Herny Royce Institute has launched a new Outreach website to promote Materials Science and Engineering to new and diverse audiences. The website includes information on the Institute’s latest events as well as highlights from a varied calendar of public engagement including Bluedot Festival.

Learning resources for teachers

The new outreach pages also include a growing library of learning resources available to teachers and school pupils to give short classroom-based demonstrations. Educators can access information sheets and video examples of activities including Impact testing different chocolate bars and understanding how biomimetic materials take inspiration from nature.

Outreach supports the Institute’s key aim to inspire the next generation of Materials Scientists and Engineers, creating a skilled talent pool for future careers in academia and industry. The Institute’s events are supported by volunteers and student interns who offer their time trialing new activities and improving their science communication skills. We spoke with volunteers at Bluedot 2019 to find out why they became involved in Materials Science and what they enjoy about public engagement.
