The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) has announced the winners of two new Henry Royce Institute Awards which celebrate the contribution of Technical Professionals to the success of advanced materials research.

The Awards are part of a wider portfolio of accolades which celebrate the highest achieving individuals and groups in the field of materials, minerals, and mining.  IOM3 Awards & Prizes also raise awareness of engineering and scientific excellence and industry best practice.

Dr Zabeada Aslam, Research Officer, The University of Leeds, has won the Henry Royce Institute Award for Outstanding Contribution by a Technical Professional and Dr Andrew Smith, Technology Manager, British Steel, has won the Henry Royce Institute Award for Innovation by a Technical Professional.

Dave Knowles, Royce CEO said:

“Huge congratulations go to Dr Zabeada Aslam and Dr Andrew Smith on winning the very first Royce Technical Professional Awards for Outstanding Contribution and for Innovation.

“Zabeada’s ability to provide expert support for a wide range of equipment dealing with samples of very different natures and involving complex analysis, shows a tireless ability to solve an array of analytical challenges. This together with the ongoing training and support she provides to new microscope users demonstrates real positive impact and clearly has a major influence on the department’s outputs.”

“Andrew’s drive for innovation and expert solutions implementation for his employer British Steel, along with the development of a number of patents and his ability to bring key teams together shows he has really gone above and beyond expectations. I’m delighted to see this has been recognised through these awards.”

Dr Andrew Smith, winner of the Henry Royce Institute Award for Innovation by a Technical Professional, added:

To receive this inaugural Royce Award is a special honour, particularly as it recognises all important technical innovation. This is so important as I know many very gifted Technical Experts who make critical and valuable contributions in their areas – for me this isn’t something that I can do on my own.

“The work I have been involved in has included many colleagues across different departments, so delivering the technology improvements achieved at British Steel Special Profiles has been a team effort. Over the last few years there have been many innovations at Skinningrove that have benefitted manufacturing quality and efficiency, and I am proud to have been involved in this. But without the support of my co-workers in Technical, Process Control, Engineering, Manufacturing and Research and Development these innovations, and this award would not have been possible.”

The Henry Royce Institute Award for Outstanding Contribution by a Technical Professional recognises the contribution of an established Technical Professional across a number of projects or activities. This Award recognises an individual who has gone beyond the normal expectation of their role and shared best practice across their own and other organisations.
