The Henry Royce Institute (Royce) is inviting expressions of interest from experienced, motivated and collaborative individuals to join the Steering Group for its Modelling and Simulation Research Area.
Modelling and simulation are central pillars of materials research, enabling deep understanding and predictive insight into material behaviour from the atomic scale to engineering-relevant systems. The Modelling and Simulation Research Area at Royce aims to support UK materials researchers across academia and industry in harnessing the full power of materials modelling – from physics-based computation to data-centric and AI-enhanced methods, to strengthening links between experimental and computational communities across sectors.
Supporting Royce’s Materials 4.0 strategy, this research theme plays a vital role in accelerating innovation through digital methods and driving collaboration between academia and industry. Its Steering Group helps to guide the strategic direction of the area, foster community engagement, and enhance UK capability in modelling and simulation of advanced materials.
Roles and Responsibilities
Members of the Modelling and Simulation Steering Group will be expected to:
- Provide strategic oversight: Support the Research Area Leads in shaping research priorities, community engagement activities, and long-term objectives.
- Champion community building: Support the Research Area team in coordinating activities that bring together stakeholders from across institutions and sectors.
- Enable collaboration: Advise on opportunities to enhance partnerships between academia and industry.
- Support foresighting: Contribute to horizon scanning and identification of emerging research directions.
- Review key outputs: Offer constructive feedback on reporting metrics and help ensure the area delivers measurable impact for the UK materials community.
Commitment
Steering Group members will be expected to:
- Attend three Steering Group meetings per year (in person or online).
- Review relevant materials ahead of meetings and contribute constructively to discussions.
- Act as ambassadors for the Modelling and Simulation research area across the wider community.
Person Specification
We are looking for individuals from all career stages and sectors who:
- Have demonstrable expertise in multi-scale modelling, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), informatics, data science, or high-performance computing (HPC).
- Can bring a collaborative mindset, strategic insight and diverse perspectives to digital first approaches.
- Are active in academia, industry, national labs, or think tanks with a strong materials focus.
