National Nuclear Laboratory Opens Call for Academic Proposals

16 August 2024

Royce Partner, the National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) invites university academics to submit proposals for access to cutting-edge equipment at its Central Laboratory in Cumbria.

As the UK’s leading nuclear fission research facility, NNL is dedicated to advancing world-class science and fostering collaboration with academic institutions. In partnership with the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) and Alpha Resilience and Capability (ARC), the NDA/ARC Sponsored Access to NNL Facilities Call is now open.

NNL provides rare ‘active’ laboratories capable of handling nuclear materials—facilities that are often unavailable at UK universities. By offering access to these labs, NNL aims to support academic researchers in advancing their nuclear research projects.

The 2024 call introduces a revised two-phase process:

  • Phase One (FY 24/25): Academics are invited to visit NNL’s active facilities, engage with experts, and develop funding applications for Phase Two.
  • Phase Two (FY 25/26): Successful proposals from Phase One will progress to joint experimental programmes with NNL scientists.

Proposals should align with the missions of NDA and/or ARC and will be assessed against specific criteria. Submissions for Phase One are open from 16th August to 27th September 2024, for visits scheduled between December 2024 and March 2025.

For details on available facilities, refer to the NIRO UK Nuclear Fission R&D Catalogue and the Royce and NNUF websites. Further information and application instructions can be found here.
