Join PGI for their 6th annual conference, Tackling Global Challenges through Measurement Science. This free conference will be held online over two days 19 – 20 October

Hear about the excellent and impactful research produced by the Postgraduate Institute for Measurement Science students through talks and posters. Listen to inspiring presentations from high profile keynote speakers including Professor Paul Monks, Chief Scientific Adviser of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, Sir Jim McDonald, Principal of the University of Strathclyde and leading academics and industrialists. There will also be a careers session for delegates and a closing motivational talk.

Every year, the conference brings together delegates from industry, academia and policy to discuss current and future global challenges. This year we will explore advancement in the following three areas:

Ensuring Wellbeing for All

Keynote Speaker: Aliza Ayaz, United Nations Youth Ambassador | Climate Action Society Executive Chair

Measurement science is critical in helping the UN member states achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, which include 169 targets and 244 indicators addressing environmental and socioeconomic issues around the world, from improving diagnostic techniques and life expectancy, to meeting the international target of carbon net zero.  This session will focus on research and technology projects designed to benefit a healthy society.

Creating a Science-Based Economy

Keynote Speaker:  Alessandro Rossi, UKRI Future Leaders Fellow, and Senior Lecturer in the Department of Physics and the National Physical Laboratory

As a result of the global pandemic, science will play an even greater role in enabling the UK’s economic recovery and driving growth as well as supporting businesses, small to large. Metrology is pivotal not only in advancing scientific outcomes, but also in restoring public confidence in evidence-based policy decisions. This session will highlight industrial solutions as well as provide examples of data-driven research improving trust and decision making.

Linking Research Excellence through Communities

Keynote Speaker: Thierry Stora, Senior Physicist at CERN

Collaborative and multi-disciplinary interactions significantly accelerate the ability to innovate through measurement science.  By widening networks, transferring knowledge and the sharing of facilities, we can broaden the impact and reach of research. This session will shine a light on partnership working in the UK and abroad, and demonstrate how networks and collaboration can strengthen academic outcomes.

The PGI has grown from strength to strength since 2015; connecting industry and academia to the UK’s Measurement Institute.  With over 200 postgraduate researchers working annually on various multi-disciplinary projects with over 30 universities across the UK, this event showcases the field of measurement science at its best. Delegates, comprising of students, research scientists, academics and individuals from industry, create and establish key relationships which accelerate career progression and academic success
