OVERVIEW
Rising Stars is returning to the Henry Royce Institute at the start of 2026. Developed and delivered by early-career researchers and academics, the workshop supports rising stars within under‑represented groups across the materials science and engineering community in the UK. During a day of talks, panel discussions and interactive sessions, participants will explore career pathways, build their professional networks and develop skills that will help them shape their own research vision. As with previous years, the event is intended to create an inclusive, supportive environment for sharing experiences around research, work–life balance and personal development.
The sessions will cover a mixture of career‑focused topics and practical exercises. There will be opportunities to discuss challenges and successes in academia and industry, learn about translational opportunities for materials research and take part in workshops aimed at strengthening CVs and job‑application skills. Rising Stars also champions the importance of diversity, inclusion and mentorship in the workplace. Participants will have time to connect with peers, mentors and representatives from institutions across the innovation landscape.
AUDIENCE
Rising Stars 2026 is aimed at students who are approaching the end of their doctoral studies, working as postdoctoral researchers, or who are otherwise early in their careers in materials science. If you are interested in developing your own research vision, exploring the commercial potential of your work or learning more about different career routes, this workshop is for you.
Places are available to participants from across the UK. Royce can support attendance by reimbursing reasonable travel costs for those living outside Greater Manchester and can also offer support for participants with caring responsibilities.
