Performance and Properties of Advanced Coatings

The use of Engineered Surfaces and Advanced Coatings provides tremendous benefits to industry and society. The performance and properties of surfaces can be enhanced, tailored and functionalised through the use of surface engineering and advanced coatings. Examples are the improvement in lifetime for metal cutting tools by coatings that act as diffusion barriers helping to prevent wear during metal cutting, and the ability to operate aero turbine blades at temperatures above the melting point of the blade materials through the use of thermal barrier coatings. Functionality such as this gives the use of engineered surfaces and advanced coatings major potential towards meeting the challenges of clean growth and sustainable use of materials.

This seminar discusses this potential and discusses the properties and performance of many different types of advanced coatings.
