Overview
This one-day workshop takes place at ISIS Neutron and Muon Source, Didcot. It aims to provide lectures and presentations covering cryogenics safety, design, operations and maintenance of cryogenics equipment, vacuum systems required for cryogenic systems as well as tours of Cryogenics workshops at the ISIS Facility and tours of the Helium Recovery Facility at ISIS.
Hands-on techniques included:
- CCRs (Closed Cycle Refrigerators)
- Wet cryogenic systems
- Preparation and cool-down of equipment
- Cryogenic liquid fills
- Common faults and diagnosis
- Vacuum and leak detection
RTPs attending the workshop will learn about a wide range of techniques and technologies applicable to cryogenics, as well as how best to share knowledge across the cryogenics RTP community.
Background and motivation
Cryogenic materials are used in laboratories all over the UK. There is a need that lab workers be able to safely handle these compounds and are fully aware of the hazards involved and how to integrate cryogenics with a variety of different pieces of lab equipment. Troubleshooting techniques are also extremely important and this workshop will aim to give demonstrations of safety and diagnostic techniques and best practice.
Audience
Aimed at: Technicians and early career staff working in technical environments, supporting low temperature research. Workshop will take place in a radiation-controlled area
This event is open to RTPs and travel can be subsidised for all attendees.
Lunch and refreshments will be provided.
Note – valid photo ID is required for access to the site.
Learning outcomes
After the course participants should be able to:
- Discuss current working methods and best practice for safe use of cryogenics and related equipment.
- Contribute to a network of RTPs in the UK for the advancement of cryogenics best practice.
