WHAT’S THE PROBLEM?
To solve the grand challenges our society faces, we need to think differently. This is particularly true in established industries that produce the materials that form the basis of our economy – i.e. the Foundation Industries1. Inter-disciplinary collaboration between students and researchers will open up the possibility of innovative approaches to climate change and other global problems.
HOW CAN NEW IDEAS BE GENERATED?
Using the developments on display at a 2022 Materials Exhibition as stimulus, teams of university students and recent graduates created exciting new ideas and solutions to meet the Challenge of social housing during a MaDE Hackathon. Building on this success, we have been asked to organise a further three Hackathons in 2024.
HOW WILL THE 2024 HACKATHONS BE ORGANISED?
The Hackathons invite students/graduates in Architecture, Product/Industrial/ Service Design, Design Engineering, Materials, Civil, Structural, Mechanical, Chemical, Systems Engineering to create a series of young, diverse, interdisciplinary teams. A different sustainability Challenge will be set at each Hackathon and you will have access to a group of mentors to help you. Expect to learn a lot, expand your network and enjoy the buzz of innovating at speed! Prizes will be awarded to the winning team at each event and everyone’s contribution will be acknowledged in a special Hackathon Report and other publicity.
HOW DO I GET INVOLVED?
Respond with your information outlining who you are, what your discipline is and your preference for either one or both Hackathons. Please note that you must be available for both days shown in the When & Where Section below.

“The Hackathon provided an invaluable learning experience, allowing me to collaborate with talented peers and apply my skills to address real-world challenges. I gained insights into rapid ideation, problem-solving, and teamwork, which I believe will greatly benefit my future endeavours.”
