OVERVIEW
This workshop will engage participants in designing and developing outreach activities focused on atomic force microscopes (AFMs). It aims to inspire new materials science communicators, diversify existing outreach in the field, and help audiences explore materials science.
The content will include presentations by leaders in outreach and experts in materials characterization. Participants will be challenged to build AFMs for outreach use and develop supporting activities to convey scientific techniques and knowledge to diverse audiences.

BACKGROUND & MOTIVATION
Royce, in collaboration with the Nanoscale Advanced Materials Engineering (NAME) Programme Grant, is hosting this interactive two-day workshop to design and curate outreach activities focused on AFMs. In the future, these activities will be able to be taken to schools and run at public science events.
This workshop will bring together a community of AFM users who are enthusiastic about outreach and public engagement. Participants are encouraged to bring along their own ideas and ask questions to make the most of this collaborative experience!
AUDIENCE
This workshop is open to PhD students, Postdoctoral Research Associates (PDRAs), and Research Technical Professionals (RTPs) working in materials science with an interest in outreach.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
After the workshop, participants should be able to:
- Acquire expertise in using portable AFMs,
- Develop their own AFM outreach activities for educational and engagement purposes,
- Engage with the AFM outreach community.
