Background and motivation

This workshop aims to engage future materials science innovators and aspiring entrepreneurs. It will equip participants with knowledge of the commercialisation process to take a new material from the laboratory to a marketable product.

The UK has a pressing need to accelerate the speed of materials translation to drive innovation and tackle global challenges. By building on national research excellence in materials science, and unlocking innovation, new materials will reach market faster and have a wider impact across multiple sectors. By increasing knowledge of commercialisation among researchers, Royce hopes to drive UK innovation, kick-start materials translation through start-ups, connect individuals to special expertise and highlight opportunities for future support on the commercialisation journey.

Audience

This workshop is aimed at later stage PhD students in materials science with an interest in innovation and the commercialisation of their research. Participants might be wanting an overview of the process, seeking to learn details about next steps, or already be on the path to company startup and future entrepreneurial activity.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the workshop, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the main stages of the materials commercialisation process
  • Recognise the key roles and support available within universities, from Royce, and the in wider UK innovation ecosystem
  • Outline the role of technology transfer offices, IP and patents, early-stage funding and commercial investors
  • Identify early indicators of intellectual property or market relevance. Assess the commercial potential of their research and the next steps required
