Digitalisation for sustainable manufacturing

Jointly presented by UK Manufacturing Symbiosis Network and Digital Surface Manufacturing projects, the event is targeted at professionals with an interest in sustainable manufacturing

In contrast with the traditional, linear economy model: Make-Use-Dispose, the circular economy is rooted in nature cycles, promoting a Make/Remake-Use/Reuse approach. The adoption of circularity practices increases sustainable manufacturing and consumption, benefiting businesses, society and the environment. Manufacturing firms are embracing the opportunities of circular economy approaches as a means to save costs, prevent disruptions in materials input and generate additional revenue from waste streams.

Surface manufacturing is important: surface-initiated effects cause more than 90% of all engineering product failures (wear, corrosion or fatigue). The Made Smarter report estimated benefits of adopting Industrial Digital Technologies (IDTs) to be up to £455bn in next decade for UK manufacturing sector. The UK coating manufacturing industry is worth £11bn and the related products/applications £140bn. The UK is not yet capitalising on its rapidly growing digital sector by applying these technologies in an industrial setting. IDTs are providing a significant opportunity to the UK’s industrial economy.

Digitalisation of surface manufacturing means being able to represent in digital form all coatings and the processes by which they are produced. The digitalisation of coatings is vital to enabling full life-cycle assessment of coated products and the sustainability implications of the coatings applied, contributing to the long-term aims of resilient manufacturing.

Industry 4.0 technology can facilitate sustainable manufacturing and circular economy practices. If you have an interest in manufacturing and sustainability, then this event is for you!
