The UK FIB & Prep User Group serves as an open platform for users of FIB systems and all microscopy-related specimen preparation techniques The group provides a platform for members to share advancements, discuss best practices, present both experimental and theoretical findings, exchange tips for preparing challenging materials, analyse complex 2D and 3D datasets, and stay updated on the latest developments in instrumentation and techniques.

Since 2013, this annual meeting has been held in Manchester in a free workshop format, providing attendees with the opportunity to engage directly with experts and manufacturers. This year, the meeting will be held in a hybrid format (both in-person and online) with support from RMS, HRI and UoM. Presentations from experts and researchers on cutting-edge technology and its diverse applications will offer valuable insights for participants.

With the rapid advancement of FIB systems and an increasing global demand for trained users, the need for effective training has never been greater. FIB training typically involves a steep learning curve, but the hands-on training sessions led by experienced professionals can accelerate your understanding of the technique. These sessions will also include Q&A opportunities, allowing you to gain deeper insights during the training.

The topics and speakers (listed in alphabetical order by last name and talk titles) are as follows:

  • Correlative microscopy of materials degradation in metal alloys using FIB and PFIB
  • CryoFIB for better imaging
  • Developments of cryogenic Plasma Focused Ion Beam workflows for environmentally sensitive material systems
  • Searching for Nanoparticles – FIB to the rescue
  • Plasma FIB for nanoscale examination of tissue in near-native state
  • Plasma FIB for structural determination in situ
  • Pushing the limit of chemical contrast: the latest advancement in FIB-SIMS
  • Volumetric imaging of native biological samples
