Thermal Analysis

University of Sheffield

Thermal analysis is a set of laboratory techniques used to study how a material’s properties change as it is heated or cooled.

Description

With these techniques the temperature is the variable, and the properties measured can be physical or chemical. This is used to monitor phenomena like polymorphism, phase transitions, stability, and chemical reactions.

Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC): Measures the heat flow to a sample as it is heated or cooled. This can identify properties like melting, glass transition, and crystallization.

Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA): Measures changes in the mass of a sample over time as temperature is changed. This is useful for studying decomposition or the loss of volatiles.

Simultaneous Thermal Analysis (STA):  is a technique that combines TGA and DSC to measure a samples’s mass change and heat flow at the same time.
