Sheet metal rolling mill

FENN model 081 laboratory reversing mill

Royce Hub building | University of Manchester

A high-performance rolling mill capable of operating in 2-high or 4-high configuration

Description

In the 2-high configuration the rolls are 213 mm diameter x 406 mm face width, alloy steel. When operating in the 4-high configuration the 2-high rolls drive the smaller rolls with a 63.5mm diameter x 400mm face width. Both rolls are hardened to 60-62 HRC and ground to a fine finish. The mill can operate at a separating force up to 1800kN (180 metric tons) at maximum speed and is fitted with integrated load cells for real-time force measurement. The roll gap is controlled by an electro-mechanical screwdown system with servo motors and worm reducers, integrated with HMI digital readout.
The mill can accommodate a variety of sample sizes with a maximum thickness up to 40mm and width of 300mm. In the 2-high configuration material possible final thickness is 0.5-0.7mm depending on material and sample size. In the 4-high configuration the final material thickness is <200µm (material and sample size dependent). Tolerances on the rolling mill are ±0.025 mm at 10 mm; ±0.010 mm at 0.7 mm across the width.

Uses / Applications

Designed with versatility and reliability in mind, accommodating a wide range of non-ferrous and ferrous materials including aluminium, magnesium, titanium, steel and nickel alloys.
