Lab-based Hard X-ray Spectrometer

easyXAFS 300+

Centre for Energy Materials Research (CEMR) | University of Oxford

The easyXAFS 300+ is a scientific instrument designed for detailed analysis of the atomic and electronic structure of materials.

Description

easyXAFS is a high-powered, laboratory-scale X-ray absorption (XAS) and emission (XES) spectrometer. It allows researchers to perform advanced, element-specific studies of material properties without needing access to a synchrotron facility.

X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFS): The instrument measures how a sample absorbs X-rays across a range of energies. This provides information on the target element’s local coordination environment (e.g., coordination number, distance, neighboring atom species), oxidation state, and spin state.

X-ray Emission Spectroscopy (XES): The 300+ upgrade includes a dedicated XRF-style X-ray tube for high-efficiency XES measurements. XES provides complementary information to XAFS, offering insights into detailed electronic properties like ligand identity and valence-to-core energy transitions.

Lab-scale: This system is notable because it enables high-quality, synchrotron-level XAFS and XES measurements in a standard laboratory setting, which traditionally required travel to large national facilities.
