Detailed Description

Our research focuses on demonstrating material performance, specifically to assess corrosion fatigue and crack growth rates in light water reactor environments at temperatures up to 360°C and 200 bar. The equipment is suitable for electrochemical studies, oxidation studies, and stress corrosion cracking tests using self-loaded samples.

The suite includes: two autoclaves for ultra-slow strain rate and low-cycle fatigue studies at up to 100kN. The systems are equipped with Direct Current Potential Drop (DCPD) for crack growth rate measurements of up to 3 Compact Tension specimens loaded in series; an autoclave rated at up to 340°C for hydrogenated, oxygenated or doped water chemistry; a stainless steel vessel rated up to 500°C for hydrogenated, oxygenated or doped water chemistry; a vessel with a stainless steel recirculating loop rated at up to 288°C for hydrogenated, oxygenated or doped water chemistry with full control of water conductivity and dissolved gasses; full electrochemical control of the samples whilst actively loaded. In addition we have autoclaves comes with in-situ electrochemistry capability and rated at temperatures up to 315°C for oxidation experiments in light water reactor environments, equipped with internal reference electrode and impedance electron spectroscopy for oxide characterisation in high pressure water up to 360°C windowed autoclaves which allow researchers to perform in situ digital image correlation (DIC) in real time via a transparent sapphire window and while a sample is being loading by four point bending.
