Detailed Description

A radiation hardened Olympus upright optical microscope, with integrated triple laser Raman capability (Horiba Scientific). The microscope also has a Vickers microhardness indenter tip, and comes equipped with a series of standards for testing. The microscope is installed in a heavily shielded hot cell, designed for handling ex-service nuclear materials, both fissile and activated. The microscope can be remotely operated, and has bright field and polarised light capability combined with coaxial illumination system.

Uses/Applications

Irradiated (ex-service) reactor materials – particularly ceramics e.g. UO2; oxide layers on metallic substrates, oxide corrosion products, graphitic materials.

Microscope - bright field - Polarisation with crossed polariser / analyser
