Detailed Description
This suite of equipment facilitates the precuror handling and preparation of alpha, beta and gamma dry materials in solid or powder form. There will also be a counting room for active materials to be characterised and a secure storage as appropriate.
Uses/Applications
It is necessary to understand the impact of prolonged radiation on the mechanical performance of a range of materials such as graphite and Zircaloy used in fission and fusion facilities. Understanding the corrosion impact on radionuclide behaviour in encapsulated or enclosed form is vital in understanding the state of our current waste stockpile and making the most economical choices in its handling and disposal. Understanding the future behaviour of the UK’s proposed geological disposal facility requires intimate knowledge of the interaction of radionuclides with the materials used in the construction of the facility.
A range of state of the art preparation tools dedicated to the preparation of active metals for microscopy. This suite includes: Hot cells, Tenupol units for electrolytic thinning of metal specimens; E.A Fischione 1051 TEM mill, Struers DAP-7 metal polishing table, waterjet cutter for graphite and Zicalloy materials. In addition a suite of inert atmosphere gloveboxes for handling bulk quantities of uranic powders. These contain sample preparation facilities including mechanical/hydraulic pellet presses, automated polisher, slow speed saw and a tube furnace (1300 deg C) for non-oxide material synthesis.
