Steven Brown
Sustainability Director at Composites UK

Steven is an industrial polymer chemist with 20 years’ professional experience; the majority dedicated to making structural materials for the composites industry. Steven started his career at the University of Strathclyde where he completed his degree in chemistry before pursuing a PhD under the supervision of Prof Peter Cormack. He followed this with a post-doctoral position at the University of Leeds with Prof Sebastian Perrier working on RAFT chemistry which eventually led to a polymer chemist role at Scott Bader Company Ltd.

During his working career, Steven has developed and scaled up water-based and oil-based coatings, thickeners for personal care, unsaturated resins for composite applications, 3D printing resins & fire-retardant materials. Steven has a strong history of collaborating with UK academics (such as the Universities of Sheffield, Bath, UCL, York, Cranfield, Edinburgh, Liverpool, and Warwick) and research institutes (such as iCAST, CSCT, Fraunhofer, TWI, WMG, NCC and CPI). Within his current role Steven is responsible for managing and directing Scott Bader’s R&D efforts in resin chemistry, bonding pastes & gelcoats, and working to close the loop on sustainable composite manufacturing.

Steven has previously served on the Group Board for Scott Bader for 6 years where he gained valuable experience in governance, financial cycles, and strategic planning. During this time, he also sat on the Audit Committee, and created Scott Bader’s first Sustainability Committee – a sub-Committee of the Group Board. Collaborating with internal colleagues and external experts he was part of a small team that published Scott Bader’s inaugural ESG report which is now an annual event.

Outside of Scott Bader Steven manages the sustainable composites subgroup for Composites UK, sits on their Board of Directors and chairs the sustainability subgroup of Cefic’s VE/UPR sector group.
