Research Area Lead: Nuclear Materials

Dr Anna Widdowson is the Research Area lead for the Royce Nuclear Materials Research Area

Anna joined UKAEA in 2005 and leads a group studying fuel retention and material migration in plasma facing materials on the JET nuclear fusion device. She has over 20 years’ experience in materials characterisation which is now focused on materials in the fusion environment. Anna’s research expertise feeds into tritium inventory control, waste liability and safety issues in JET and informs the design, development and operations of future fusion devices. She has links with departments and laboratories across UKAEA, Europe and Japan involved in plasma facing materials research. She also manages a suite of edge plasma diagnostics on JET providing plasma characterisation. Prior to joining UKAEA Anna obtained a PhD from University of Warwick and developed her experience in materials characterisation in semiconductor and opto-electronics industries.
