The high frequency and short amplitudes in fretting wear make it particularly dangerous due to its multitude of effects on materials. Fatigue can occur in lower loaded contacts, at higher loads wear debris is generated and transformations occur in the material. This dynamic and multi-faceted form of wear is present from such areas as biomedical materials to automotive and aerospace.

To properly assess and monitor fretting, tribometers must be sensitive yet robust to ensure that data resolution is maintained throughout testing while maintaining the loading conditions. Optimol Instruments began in 1964 and are one of the world’s leading providers of solutions for tribological modelling, simulation and analysis. The SRV platform enables high-precision and application-oriented investigations of friction and wear.

In this live workshop, Dr McMaster will:
  • Review the fundamentals of fretting wear.
  • Provide an overview of the analytical techniques applied to fretting.
  • Explore methods to combat fretting in extreme pressure environments.
After Dr McMaster’s presentation, Gregor Patzer of Optimol Instruments will present a demo of the SRV 5 oscillation tribometer system.
