This webinar will first provide an introduction to the scientific publishing scene, including its history and recent developments. It will then explain how journal operations are organised, including the roles of the Publisher, Editors and Editorial Board. The webinar will then outline how to get published, including guidance on selecting a journal and formulating the paper content and layout. The peer review process is described. Authors’ responsibilities are discussed, including advice on publishing ethics. The move towards Open Access is also mentioned.

Allan Matthews is Professor of Surface Engineering and Tribology in the School of Materials and Director of the EPSRC NetworkPlus in Digitalised Surface Manufacturing. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. He has had a central role in many professional and learned societies, including the British Vacuum Council, the American Vacuum Society and the Society of Vacuum Coaters. He is Editor-in-Chief of the Elsevier journal Surface and Coatings Technology.
