IOM3 Young Persons Lecture 2023 Competition underway

Royce is once again a sponsor of the prestigious Young Persons’ Lecture Competition, an annual event organised by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3). 

The annual competition is open to students and professionals up to the age of 28, and invites them to deliver a fifteen-minute lecture, judged against a broad range of criteria. Lectures can be on any topic related to materials, minerals, mining, packaging, clay technology, wood science or more generally about engineering.

Each IOM3 local Society selects one participant to represent them at the regional finals, the winners of which compete in the national competition. From there, participants from across six continents gather for the Young Persons’ World Lecture Competition.

Tom Hancocks, Royce Training and Skills Manager said:

“This excellent competition provides early-career scientists and engineers with a fantastic opportunity to communicate their work on materials to a wide audience; as well as opening up other opportunities and connections, and we are delighted to once again support it. We wish all the participants every success and look forward to hearing more about their research.”

Lauren Eggleton, a second year PhD student in the Materials Science and Engineering Department at Royce Partner the University of Sheffield, won the Young Persons’ Lecture Competition in 2022. Lauren, who also represented the North East, gave a lecture entitled ‘A Sticky Situation: The Contradictory Material Properties of Snail Mucus.’

This year’s YPL is also sponsored by the Worshipful Company of Armourers & Brasiers and the final will be held at The Armourers’ Hall, London on Wednesday 3 May
