National Materials Innovation Programme Digital Materials Sandpit

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) is inviting applications for a residential sandpit exploring how digital approaches can accelerate materials innovation.

Part of the National Materials Innovation Programme (NMIP), the sandpit supports the Materials 4.0 priorities identified in the Royce-led National Materials Innovation Strategy.

About the sandpit

This intensive, collaborative workshop will bring together different disciplines to develop research projects addressing barriers to digital integration across the materials lifecycle. Areas of interest include data stewardship, digital twins, automation, artificial intelligence, advanced characterisation and manufacturing.

Participants will work with a director and mentors to identify challenges, build collaborations and develop proposals for funding.

Who should apply?

Applications are welcomed from people with expertise across:

  • Materials science, engineering and physical sciences
  • Mathematics, computer science, data science and artificial intelligence
  • Advanced manufacturing, industrial digitalisation and robotics
  • Social sciences and responsible research and innovation

The organisers particularly welcome people who can contribute perspectives from different stages of materials innovation and work collaboratively across disciplines.

Applicants seeking research funding must meet EPSRC’s individual and organisational eligibility requirements. Industry representatives can apply to participate and develop projects as partners, but businesses cannot receive funding through this opportunity.

Funding and applications

EPSRC expects to support three to eight projects, sharing approximately £7.12 million, for up to 33 months. Funding will cover 80% of the full economic cost.

Applicants must first submit an expression of interest to attend through UKRI/EPSRC. Following the sandpit, teams whose projects are recommended for funding will be invited to submit full applications through the UKRI Funding Service. Attendance does not guarantee funding.

Participation and practical information

Selected participants must attend the full residential event and online introduction. Accommodation is provided; participants must arrange their own travel.

Expressions of interest will be assessed by a selection panel, with applicants expected to hear the outcome by mid-December 2026.

Submit your expression of interest by 4pm on 26 November 2026.

Read the full guidance and apply through UKRI.
