A new national roadmap sets out how the UK can translate its strengths in metamaterials research into commercial technologies, manufacturing capability and economic growth.
The UK Metamaterials Commercialisation Roadmap identifies priorities for accelerating the commercialisation and industrial adoption of these technologies over the next decade, while sustaining the fundamental research that underpins future discoveries.
Developed by the government-convened Metamaterials Strategy Action Group, and facilitated by the Institute of Physics, the roadmap draws on workshops, consultation and expert input from industry, academia, research and technology organisations, and policymakers.
It identifies five thematic priorities: ecosystem, innovation, manufacturing, assurance and skills. Together, these provide a framework for addressing the barriers between research breakthroughs and commercially viable products.
A central challenge is manufacturing: developing the processes and capacity needed to produce metamaterials at scale. The roadmap highlights this as both a bottleneck to commercialisation and an opportunity to build a strong UK industrial base, supporting resilient supply chains and applications across healthcare, energy, communications, aerospace, defence and security.
It also emphasises that commercial success depends on maintaining the UK’s research excellence and specialist skills. Coordinated action across research, industry and government will be needed to connect these strengths with investment and market opportunities.
Professor David Knowles, CEO of the Henry Royce Institute, said:
The UK has an exceptional research base in metamaterial systems and this new Roadmap from the Metamaterials Strategy Action Group provides an important opportunity to translate that strength into both commercial and economic impact.
“At Royce we’ve been helping to bridge the gap between research and application through our Metamaterials Industrial Collaboration Programme, supporting a range of fast pace collaborative sprint projects that bring universities, RTOs and industry together to accelerate technology development and scale-up.
“The Roadmap now gives us the shared direction needed to build on this kind of momentum. By connecting research excellence with industrial need, manufacturing capability and investment we can help turn the UK’s leadership in metamaterials science into technologies that deliver real benefit for the economy and society.”
Welcoming the roadmap, Chris McDonald MP, Minister for Science, Innovation and Investment, said:
Metamaterials represent a significant opportunity to strengthen the UK’s technology and industrial base, supporting economic growth, and solving societal challenges. Realising this opportunity will depend on our ability to translate cutting-edge research into commercially viable products and new industrial solutions. I welcome the publication of the Metamaterials Commercialisation Roadmap and its vision for accelerating innovation, attracting investment and building the partnerships needed to position the UK at the forefront of the transformative potential of metamaterials.”
With the strategic framework established, the UK Metamaterials Network will support the wider community in taking forward its ambitions. The aim is to build on the UK’s research strengths to establish a world-leading hub for metamaterials innovation, development and manufacturing, delivering technologies that benefit society and the economy.
