The Henry Royce Institute (Royce) has opened applications for Cohorts 2 and 3 of Royce Catalyst, following a successful pilot programme.
Royce Catalyst brings together researchers, technology founders and supervisors to explore commercial opportunities and routes to market, to support the translation of cutting-edge materials research into real-world impact.
Royce will host an application guidance webinar on Monday 11th May at 15.00, providing an overview of the programme and the opportunity to ask questions about the open cohorts. The webinar is open to all prospective learners, technology leads/founders and supervisors.
In the meantime, here are a selection of frequently asked questions (FAQs) we’ve received about Royce Catalyst.
Learners
Am I eligible for a scholarship?
All UK-based researchers from any research background are eligible. You will need to demonstrate a genuine interest in understanding how advanced materials technologies reach commercial application. We will consider applicants beyond academia (e.g. those working on a materials-based venture) on a case-by-case basis.
I’m no longer based in a university or research institution, can I still apply?
Yes. Independent applicants or those between roles are welcome if you’re focused on materials commercialisation. Fees generally apply, though scholarships may be considered on a case-by-case basis depending on fit.
If you are at an early stage of building a materials-based venture, you are also encouraged to apply, and scholarships may be available depending on the nature and focus of your venture (UK only).
What are the anticipated time commitments for the programme?
Royce Catalyst runs over 16 weeks and sits alongside your existing work or research commitments. All elements are compulsory:
- Launch Day, Manchester
- Learning Retreat, 4 days / 40 hours of intensive residential education
- Online workshops, ~10 hours, delivered after the Learning Retreat
- 5 expert supervisions, ~10 hours
- Project research and team collaboration, 50+ hours, organised flexibly around your schedule
- Pitch Day, Manchester
Please ensure you have supervisor or line manager approval to attend the in-person sessions before enrolling.
Are all learner applicants interviewed?
If your application and scholarship statement are clearly written and you meet the eligibility criteria, we will decide based on your application alone.
If we need further clarity, we will invite you to a short informal conversation – no preparation required.
Technology Leaders and Founders
How do I know if my technology fits within the scope of Royce Catalyst?
A good starting point is the themes defined within the National Materials Innovation Strategy:
- Energy solutions
- Future healthcare
- Structural innovations
- Advanced surface technologies
- Next-generation electronics, telecommunications and sensors
- Consumer products, packaging and specialist polymers
Cross-cutting themes of Materials 4.0 and sustainability and the circular economy also apply.
If you are unsure, submit your application and the team will assess fit as part of the review process.
My technology is still at an early stage, is it too soon to apply?
No. The learner team’s job is to explore potential value and direction, not validation. This makes the findings genuinely useful for your next move, whether that is a funding application, a licensing conversation, or prioritising which application space to pursue first.
Who owns the output of the Commercial Feasibility Report?
All IP remains squarely with the technology lead, and participation places no impingement on your existing rights. The report is seen by programme assessors as part of the evaluation process but is not shared beyond this.
Supervisors
How does the supervisor recruitment process work?
Successful applicants will join a supervisor pool and will have the opportunity to be matched to projects as cohorts are confirmed. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
Do supervisors need a science or engineering background?
Not necessarily – we welcome a wide range of backgrounds. What matters most is real-world experience of how technologies reach commercial application. That might come from industry, investment, venture building, IP, accelerator coaching, or enterprise network development.
What is the honorarium rate for supervisors?
We offer an honorarium of £1,500 for providing five supervision sessions across the 16-week programme (right to work in the UK essential). This also includes attendance at Launch Day and Pitch Day, and provision of written feedback on assignments.
