UKAEA Materials Research Facility Expands Capabilities

8 December 2025

The UK Atomic Energy Authority’s (UKAEA) Materials Research Facility (MRF) located at its Culham Campus, is entering an exciting phase of capability growth.  Through its partnership with the Henry Royce Institute, the MRF can offer a range of expanded access opportunities, including Royce Access funding for academic researchers, the Royce SME Access Scheme and its ICP funding pathways for businesses. MRF also participates in Innovate UK funded access for industry-led collaborations.

Dr Andrew Smith, who was appointed Head of MRF earlier this year, and who is also the Royce Partner Lead for UKAEA said:

“As we prepare for the MRF Hot-Cells to return to operation in 2026 with new capabilities in tensile testing of large samples, and as we roll out our next stage of advanced robotic handling for characterisation of irradiated materials, we welcome enquiries from users across the research and innovation community.

“We’re also delighted to bring new equipment online, including our state-of-the-art Thermal Desorption Spectrometry instrument, which is now available and ready for users. We look forward to enabling pioneering work that supports the UK’s materials and nuclear research ambitions.”

The MRF welcomes any enquiries about accessing its capabilities, which can be directed to MaterialsEnquiries@mrf.ukaea.uk
