Overview
This workshop aims to train participants in key principles and applications of Ceramic Matrix Composites.
The Defence Materials Centre of Excellence (DMEx) and University of Birmingham are organising a 2-day workshop on Ceramic Matric Composites (CMCs) open to the DMEx Exploitation Working Group and defence primes. The course will provide an overview of CMCs including key principles of the materials paradigm (processing-structure-properties). There will be also be opportunities for participants to network and discuss common challenges they face in this field.
Format: In-person
Location: University of Birmingham
Cost: Free
Background and motivation
This programme will develop participants’ understanding of advanced ceramic materials through a series of lectures and discussions including guest speakers from industry and academia. Key topics will cover an introductory overview, mechanical and thermal behaviour, processing, characterisation, modelling and design. There also be more focused discussions on CMC applications for jet engines, hypersonics and rocket motors. Additionally, there will be opportunities for networking to foster collaborations and contribute to the DMEx community throughout the two days.
Audience
The introductory course is aimed at staff from Defence Primes and S&T organisations supporting the DMEx Exploitation Group, Effectors TWG and Dstl.
Registration is available here: https://forms.cloud.microsoft/e/EiDDqcNpds
Lunch and refreshments will be provided. Travel and accommodation will not be subsidised by DMEx and will have to be arranged through other means.
Learning outcomes
After the course participants should be able to:
- Understand ceramic matrix composite key principles and the practicality of using them
- Appreciate the role of ceramic matrix composite materials via modelling, design and case studies
- Contribute to the DMEx network and foster collaboration
