A visible light microscope, combined with a digital camera. Optical microscopy, when employed using different types of transmitted illumination, can be used to study a variety of transparent specimens, including liquids. Examples of the use of optical microscopy include:

  • Determination of particle size, area fraction and volume fraction (using image analysis)

  • Assessment of polymer solutions and the quality of emulsions
