NNL are holding an open day on the 19th February 2020 at the non-radioactive Workington facility.

This will be a unique opportunity to visit the Henry Royce Institute funded optical microscope with three Raman lasers, a microhardness HV tester (Vickers) and in-situ mechanical testing stage.

The multiple capabilities of this microscope allow complete characterisation of highly active samples, including but not limited to:

  • Irradiated fuels
  • Cladding
  • Graphite
  • Waste forms

The open day will be a rare chance to view the new equipment before it is installed in a nuclear hot cell at NNL’s Windscale Laboratory in April 2020. Scientist and researchers from NNL will be present to discuss the capabilities of the new equipment together with potential opportunities for use. Data gathered using the equipment will be on display to demonstrate its performance capabilities.

Format of the Day

The day will be split into 3 identical sessions:

  • 08:15-10:15
  • 11:00-13:00
  • 14:00-16:00

Please indicate which session you would like to attend when registering.

Photographic ID is required to enter the facility.
