Martin O’Brien’s early career concentrated on research into nuclear fusion plasmas, developing BANDIT-3D, then the leading code for modelling electron cyclotron wave heating of tokamaks.

Following this, he was appointed the Fusion Programme Manager at the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (CCFE), eventually going on to be Head of Theory & Modelling Department at CCFE, providing direction to critical materials and plasma research for the Joint European Torus fusion programme.

From 2013, he was project sponsor for the £10M Materials Research Facility (MRF) at CCFE. Completed in 2016 with assistance from the Henry Royce Institute, MRF provides practical research capability for CCFE, universities and industry for complex fission and fusion experiments.

Martin’s external roles include membership of advisory panels for Oxford University, EPSRC and the National Nuclear User Facility steering committee.
